Home Office 101/4:  How to Maintain Balance

In a regular home office routine, we cook our meals, do our work, and before we know it, we might not want to dedicate time to anything other than work. But that’s not the way it should be. Our main task is completed when we take care of the extra things listed below:

Pay Attention to Your Routines While Working at Home Office

In the next article, I discussed routines with high potential 🙂 Here’s a tip: ask yourself, “What can I do repeatedly that makes me feel ready to start working?”

We Really Need to Exercise

These exercises don’t have to be strenuous. If you’re stuck on a task and can’t move forward, exercise is often the thing that gets you out of that rut. This could be a short walk outside, yoga, or Pilates. Whatever makes you feel comfortable in your body, that’s what I mean by exercise.

We Should Go Out for Regular Shopping While Working at Home Office

Even if we order our groceries online, you still won’t get everything you need in one go. Going out to pick up that one item gives you a chance to get some fresh air. Let me emphasize the importance of short walks here again. Don’t wait for the toilet paper to run out to make a trip to the store.

Don’t Put Your Social Life on Hold While Working at Home Office

Life goes on. It’s up to us to catch up with it. So sometimes you might have to break your meticulously planned schedule to join a friend’s plan. I think it’s okay to occasionally revise your schedule and make time for friends 🙂 I admit, I don’t practice this as much as I should. But even if not every day, we should be able to disrupt our plans every now and then.

Attend Work-Related Festivals and Meetings

Participate in festivals and meetings organized for your work, exchange business cards, and use those cards to create new job and project opportunities for yourself later. It’s never just “I gave my card, done.” Sometimes you need to take the initiative to interact with that person. There’s nothing wrong with saying, “I have an idea for a project,” and calling them to remind them of you. Even if it’s not for that project, it opens the door for them to reach out to you for other projects.

Use Ergonomic Furniture

To avoid future medical expenses, you need to invest in yourself. A tiny desk and an uncomfortable stool are predictors of future back pain and stiffness. Even if you exercise, you should set up an ergonomic workspace.

Keep Your Home Organized While Working at Home Office

Mess often happens on its own, but tidying up now and then not only helps with concentration but also makes the environment feel refreshing, as if you’re working in a new place. (Personal experience) Tidying up the small mess from the night before in the morning often gives me inspiration.

Pay Attention to Healthy Eating

Not just for your physical health, but also because sitting at a computer all day with zero movement and eating junk food will make it impossible to concentrate or be productive. Creativity needs nourishment, and nourishment comes from healthy food and drinks. The rest, unfortunately, is junk. I share various healthy recipes on this blog, and most of them are very practical. I recommend you check them out.

“I’ve Worked Hard Today, I’ll Order Takeout”

For instance, in our house, we keep a calendar. We allow ourselves to order food from outside once a week because it encourages us to eat healthily and helps us control our spending. I recommend you keep a calendar too.

The Home Office Curse

I will discuss this in future articles. If you need to work and find yourself spending your days doing nothing and not even wanting to move, stay tuned for my articles…

Are You Tired, Worn Out, or Stressed from Working?

Stop. Forcing yourself increases the risk of making mistakes. Focus on something else. If you absolutely must finish the task, find something to distract yourself without leaving your desk.

Mental Health is essential when you work at Home Office

Protecting our mental health while working from home is just as important as physical health. Here are some tips to maintain your mental well-being:

  • Take Regular Breaks: Taking short breaks at regular intervals rests your mind and increases focus. You can try techniques like the Pomodoro method.
  • Meditation and Breathing Exercises: Doing short meditations or breathing exercises throughout the day reduces stress and enhances mental clarity.
  • Stay Connected: Keeping in regular touch with family and friends helps reduce the effects of social isolation. Video calls or online events can be helpful in this regard.
  • Hobbies and Personal Time: Spending time on hobbies and interests outside of work supports mental health. Activities like painting, reading, or gardening can help relax your mind.
  • Digital Detox: Reducing screen time and regularly doing a digital detox can lessen mental fatigue. Set times to turn off your phone and computer and just relax.
  • Be Kind to Yourself: Be understanding with yourself when work gets overwhelming. Avoid perfectionism and accept that making mistakes is natural.

If You Lose Motivation While Working:

Watch something but set a rule for yourself not to do it for hours.
Browse a magazine,
Spray some perfume, light incense, or a candle,
Browse news sites,
Explore sites that inspire you related to your work,
Changing the type of music you listen to can help shake off your boredom.
Refresh your drink. Try a different flavor.
If nothing works, start preparing your next meal.
Take a bath, wash your hands and face, contact with water can help you feel renewed.
Take your laptop and work from a cafe, even your balcony will do at this point.
Reflect on why you’re so tired of working. List the solutions. (I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I love making lists)

Finally:

Even if you set up everything perfectly, know that this order won’t last long. Because life happens. Life is full of unexpected moments and changes, and you need to adapt and evolve accordingly. The home office is one of those things.
