Mindfulness, with a Touch of a Smile

Lately, as I’ve been practicing mindfulness, I’ve realized that I tend to take it a little too seriously. You know how it’s always about “Stay in the moment, clear your mind, focus”? But maybe we need to see the humor in “everything” a bit more often. Living a humorous life doesn’t mean trivializing things—it’s about appreciating their importance while also recognizing their funny side.

When I meditate, I want my thoughts to drift gently like clouds, but sometimes those clouds turn into storms! In the past, I would dive deep into the origins of that storm, get lost in it, and struggle to find my way back. But now, I’ve learned to take a step back and look at the situation (or the storm) through the lens of mindfulness. On a good day, I can even enjoy the rain, feeling the drops on my face and smiling in the midst of it all. What’s left afterward is simply waving goodbye to the storm as it passes.

Don’t Forget to Smile

Mindfulness is often described as having a “calm and peaceful mind.” But sometimes, mindfulness is about noticing the funny side of life too.

Every morning, as I sip my coffee and try to wake up, I find myself planning out the day ahead. I look out the window, watching the trees sway in the wind if there is any. As the birds join the dance, I feel the weight of my workload—the exhaustion of managing a project meant for 11 people all by myself. But then, I take a deep breath, accompanied by another sip of coffee (or maybe it’s the caffeine), and everything starts to feel a bit lighter.

The other day, I noticed one of those dancing birds bathing in a small opening of a solar water tank nearby. It was clearly enjoying itself. The light was hitting the water at an angle, and while I couldn’t see the droplets clearly due to the distance, I could see their sparkling reflections. The whole moment had a magical quality to it—as if everything was moving in slow motion. (Or maybe I’m imagining it in slow motion as I recall it now, who knows?) But seeing that bird enjoy such a simple moment made me smile and reminded me to do the same.

Mindfulness, With a Touch of Cats

During one meditation session, as I tried to stay in the moment, my gaze wandered to the garden. There, on an abandoned chair, lay an older stray cat. A younger cat was playfully swatting at its tail. That moment brought a smile to my face. Watching the younger cat’s excitement and the older cat’s patience made me reflect.

It was as if the older cat silently accepted the joyful antics of its young friend. By letting its tail become a toy, it maintained both its calm demeanor and a wise understanding of the moment. In that instant, I realized that mindfulness is exactly that—staying in the moment, smiling a little, and sometimes, making space for the exuberance of a younger spirit.

The True Essence of Mindfulness

When Can and I go for walks on the beach, stray dogs sometimes join us. Walking with them feels like they’re lifting away my stress, burdens, and worries. With every step we take together, the simple act of walking feels lighter. Sometimes, the dog ahead of us pauses, turns around, and looks at me as if to say, “Come on, leave your troubles behind and keep up!”

Perhaps, without realizing it, these dogs are teaching me the truest form of mindfulness: staying in the moment and moving forward.

So, if you ever see me chatting with dogs on the street, just keep walking—don’t interrupt our little conversation (or session). Of course, these playful, mindfulness-filled, furry walks usually end with me being interrogated by my cat, Pıtır, when I get home. I suppose that’s the price I pay for the session!

Embracing Life with Humor

I’ve come to realize that mindfulness isn’t just about calming down. It’s also about noticing what’s funny or absurd in life. And in those moments, instead of taking ourselves too seriously, just laughing and letting it go.

So, if you spill your coffee today or your phone rings just as you start meditating… let it be. Because life isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being real and finding the humor in it.
