Home Office 101/5: Best Work-from-Home Routines

Let’s dive into the Best Work-from-Home Routines! So, you wake up, and it’s a workday.
Your meticulously prepared to-do list is waiting for you.
You’ve had your breakfast.
Now what?

Some experts suggest grabbing your planner before even touching your phone. However, since our planners are often on our phones or tablets, I don’t see the need to insist on this.

What makes you feel comfortable?

What routine helps you get ready to dive into work?

Of course, I personally don’t recommend smoking. You shouldn’t smoke at all, to begin with. But don’t use “getting into the mood” as an excuse to light up. 🙂

In the mornings, while waiting for my coffee to brew in the filter machine, I take a look around my workspace. Tidying up any mess gives me a sense of motivation to start the day and work. I love working in a neat space, and clearing away last night’s leftover glass from my desk is part of my morning ritual.

The routine you initially create may not work over time. Don’t hesitate to try different things. Here are some potential daily routines I’ve practiced or considered trying myself:

A List of High-Potential and Best Work-from-Home Routines (Of course, not all at once! 😀):

  • Doing morning exercises or simple stretching to wake up your muscles.
  • Planning and setting a reminder for your lunch (important, so you don’t forget).
  • Clearing unnecessary items from your desk that you won’t need that day.
  • Spending about half an hour catching up on current events, work-related news, or articles.
  • Checking your emails, removing spam, and responding to important ones.
  • Gradually reviewing your notes to remember where you left off yesterday.
  • Perhaps making another cup of coffee and always keeping a glass of water nearby.
  • Taking breaks to open the window, breathe, and refresh the air in the room.
  • Enjoying a tea break, preferably on the balcony under the sun.
  • Spending time with your cat or dog.
  • Playing your favorite music to set the mood and adjust its volume and tempo.
  • Reading a magazine or book in your cozy corner before diving into work.
  • On days when working at home feels impossible, heading to a favorite café.
  • Using incense or candles to change the room’s atmosphere.
  • Waking up at a consistent time, even on days off.
  • Keeping your home tidy and organized.

Do You Have Pre-Meeting Routines?

Okay, I know I might seem obsessive at this point, but some habits and routines genuinely make those “must-do” tasks easier. For instance, if you need to attend a meeting reluctantly, why not treat yourself to a coffee beforehand?

When working from home becomes a way of life, you’ll notice how comfortable it feels—but it takes time. Early efforts may seem futile, but trust me, any routine that helps you sit down to work is the right one for you.

Remember, the wrong routine is one that harms you or your workflow.

What Are the “Routines You Should Absolutely Avoid”?

  • Watching people you envy on social media and daydreaming. Social media is a curated space like a Hollywood set. Don’t let it drain your energy because you’re not “like them.”
  • Allowing friends to vent their problems to you early in the morning. It’s okay to set boundaries and prioritize yourself first thing in the day.
  • Keeping up with local or global news can be mentally taxing and overwhelming. For my peace of mind, I’ve chosen not to follow the news regularly.

I could extend this list, but I trust you’ve grasped the general idea.

Routines should support your goals, keep you grounded, and enrich your perspective. Remember your objectives and let routines be the habits that guide you toward them.
