A long mindfulness journey often reminds my body of its limits, yet as part of a spiritual experience, I discovered ways to nourish myself along the way. It was during this journey that I reconnected with the concept of “peace” through every mindful step I took.
Our journey from Bodrum to Konya, and back again, was filled with our usual coffee breaks. These little stops lightened the weight of the road, offering moments to pause and breathe.
I can’t say I loved the gas station coffee, but I realized these breaks gave me a sense of brief yet refreshing rest. On serious trips, they helped reduce stress, while on more pleasant journeys, they transformed into moments of joy.

As someone with MS, I knew that sitting still for hours would eventually take its toll on my body. That’s why I made this a mindfulness journey, and from time to time, I step out of the car at every break and stretch. These movements relieved the tension in my legs, improved my circulation, and relaxed my stiff shoulders and neck. Thanks to these mindful practices, I finished the journey without any pain and with renewed energy.

A Mindfulness Journey of Memories…
Last week, my family and I embarked on a meaningful journey to Konya. We gathered to honor and remember my grandmother on the first anniversary of her passing. According to Sufi teachings, leaving this world is seen as a reunion with God. With this peaceful awareness in our hearts, we prayed by her grave. The shared respect and tranquility among us filled me with pride.

During this mindfulness journey, what caught my attention most were the majestic birds of prey I often saw along the way. Their impressive wings and commanding presence made me think they were either hawks or falcons. I counted six on our way to Konya and five on the return trip. Imagining these birds silently greeting and bidding farewell to me was a sweet thought that brought a smile to my face.
When we finally arrived in Konya, the vast and flat landscape didn’t immediately give us that “we’re here” feeling. The long roads stretched ahead, delaying our arrival at the city center. However, as we approached the Tomb of Rumi, the spiritual energy of the city began to envelop us.
Sufism and the Shrine
As a 23rd-generation descendant of Rumi, Sufi teachings have always profoundly moved me. This tradition, woven with respect and kindness, is evident in every action. For instance, when handing something to someone, it is first kissed and placed on the forehead before being offered with both hands—a gesture of reverence for both the object and the recipient.
Another detail I admire is how Sufis say “putting the candle to sleep” instead of “extinguishing” it, or “waking the candle” instead of “lighting” it. This graceful language reflects a commitment to avoiding harsh expressions, emphasizing respect and care.
Visiting the Shrine
Visiting the shrine always feels like coming home. Even before reaching the entrance, a sense of peace begins to stir within me, as if I am about to reunite with a long-lost part of myself. My knees feel lighter, and the burdens on my shoulders lift. “Yes, I’m here,” I say to myself silently. Leaving behind the tension in my mind, I feel both my body and soul at ease. This sanctuary has a way of restoring emotional balance—a gift I needed more than I realized.
Together with my family, we prayed and stayed as long as we could. This mindful moment of stillness cleansed our spirits and allowed for a profound sense of rest. I marveled at the intricate details of the walls and the beauty of Rumi’s words, which deepened my gratitude each time I visited.

This time, one thing that stood out to me was the large number of tourists from East Asia visiting the shrine. They listened intently to their guides and took pictures, seemingly eager to capture the love and reverence of the place. Seeing how people from far away sought peace here was a powerful reminder of how Rumi’s teachings transcend borders.
Morning Rituals of Care in this Mindfulness Journey
During our stay at the hotel, I never skipped my mindful morning rituals. I began each day with light yoga stretches, a soothing self-massage, and a 10-minute breathing meditation. These practices reduced muscle tension, calmed my mind, and helped me maintain steady energy throughout the day. Incorporating self-care into my daily routine not only alleviated travel fatigue but also kept me centered and mindful.

The Road Back
On our way back, we once again spotted our feathered friends and enjoyed our coffee breaks. Each stop became more than a moment to ease the fatigue—it became an opportunity to remain present and appreciate the beauty of the journey. Watching the birds soar with their wide wings felt like an unspoken invitation to understand life’s quiet messages.
Through each coffee break and each bird’s graceful flight, I learned to see the subtle yet meaningful signs that life offers. Peace, after all, often hides in the most unexpected moments. By the journey’s end, I felt both serene and spiritually enriched. This experience will remain a cherished reminder to nurture both body and soul through every mindfulness journey ahead.
