A Shampoo, A Coffee, A Plan

On the eve of a new year, we all want to leave behind the burdens of the past year. Logically, “new year planning” can bring a sense of clarity and calm to this process. But this time, those burdens felt like a shampoo left behind by a guest in the bathroom. You can’t throw it away, it’s not suitable for you to use, and shipping it back would cost more than the shampoo itself.

Since the final days of 2024, I’ve felt like I’ve been carrying around these “shampoos”: worries, restlessness, and endless plans.

Yet, as I sat down with these burdens and started writing, I realized that my words serve as a bridge—for both me and you—to a better state of mind. Writing helps me hold on, and the connection I have with you strengthens me and motivates me to keep going. (So thank you for your comments and support!)

Not at a Cafe, But in My Own Corner

Today, I’m sitting at my desk, trying to plan and write for the new year. It feels like I’m in a cafe, surrounded by the gazes of people. But those gazes are actually my “pending thoughts and plans,” constantly saying, “Come on, think about us already.”

Ignoring this distraction isn’t easy, but I’ve learned that the best way to refocus is to create a clear list of priorities. Today, as I sorted my priorities, I managed to quiet those “gazes” that had been bothering me.

From Bodrum to Izmir, Then Istanbul, and Back Again

Last week, we traveled to Izmir and then Istanbul. We thought combining these trips would be practical… but this combination was far from it. We left twice but returned only once; it felt like a never-ending journey.

This experience reminded me once again of the importance of being realistic when planning. Instead of trying to cram everything together, balancing tasks with breaks is essential. Sometimes, the fatigue from overly ambitious plans can take over and rob us of the joy we were hoping for.

Meditation and Daily Routines

At the start of the week, I added meditation to my daily routine. After my morning coffee, I realized that taking ten minutes to meditate helped calm my mind and start the day on a more balanced note. Today marked my third meditation, and I’m determined to stick with it for 21 days to make it a habit.

Meditation isn’t just a moment to pause; it’s also a chance to reflect and reassess my priorities. If you also start your day overwhelmed by thoughts, I recommend trying a short meditation with your coffee.

The Calm and Balance That Planning Brings

Planning isn’t just about organizing tasks; it’s about creating a sense of mental balance and calm, especially as the new year begins. Having a plan reduces the stress of uncertainty and brings the satisfaction of progressing step by step. Today, the plan I created gave me the chance to clarify my tasks and carve out space to focus.

It’s as if I went around the cafe, chatting with everyone, checking in on them, and setting their affairs in order. 😀

Creating this list not only helped me clarify my to-dos but also brought a sense of peace to my mind. Planning can be as fulfilling as completing a task.

Small Steps, Big Differences

Sometimes, starting fresh doesn’t mean making a huge change. It begins with small but effective steps, like planning for the new year. By taking small steps, we can create significant changes. For me, starting to write today was one of those steps.

What small step would you like to take for yourself today?

Go ahead, grab a coffee, think about it, and take that first step.

Find that lingering task that clings to you like gum, stretches out the more you touch it, and just get it done already!
